Phil Niemisto statue out for repairs this winter

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Phil Niemisto statue, located in the Phil Niemisto Pocket Park on the 100 block of West Washington Street, will be removed for the winter for repairs by artist Earl Senchuk. The statue will be replaced in the spring of 2020.

For more than three decades, 87-year-old Phil Niemisto was a constant presence in downtown Marquette, Michigan.

In appreciation, the city dedicated its downtown pocket park to Niemisto in January 2017.

On more than one occasion vandals have damaged the statue, resulting in an arrest and increased security. The scheduled maintenance and repairs will be complete in Spring.
